Eestis alustati palgiparvetust jõgedel 18. sajandi lõpul, tähtsamateks veeteedeks kujunesid Pärnu ja Emajõe jõgikonnad, Väike-Emajõgi, Võrtsjärv ja Peipsi järv. Kesksemad parvede koostekohtadeks olid Rannapungerja, Lohusuu, Omedu, Laane ja Mehikoorma Peipsil, Kavastu ja Kastre Emajõel, Oiu ja Suislepa Võrtsjärvel ja Pikasilla Väike-Emajõel. Palgiparve moodustasid omavahel trossiga ühendatud parvikud, mis koosnesid 6m pikkustest ridamisi teineteisele veeretatud ja lattidega kihiliselt kinnitatud palkidest, parviku maht umbes 20tm. Parve keskmine pikkus Peipsil ulatus 300-500m, maht 800-1000tm, mass 450-600t. Emajõel ja Võrtsjärvel olid parved poole väiksemad. Palgiparved veeti peamiselt Tartusse, ka Narva ja Pihkvasse. 1956-1960.a võeti kasutusele täistüvedest puntparved, see kiirendas parvekoostamist ning vähendas käsitsitööd. Palgiparvetus hääbus (ametlikult 1962.a) muude veoliikide arengu tõttu.
